Wood Germander

Price: $ 9.50

Teucrium scorodonia

Also known as wood sage and garlic sage, this perennial herb is native to Western Europe and Tunisia but has naturalised in New Zealand. Growing into a scrubby bush of approx 1m high, it is topped with spikes of yellow flowers in summer, which are adored by bees. The leaves are used fresh or dried used to make a tea which can be used medicinally as a tonic and to fight colds, and specifically for its alterative, astringent, carminative, diaphoretic, diuretic, emmenagogue, tonic and vulnerary uses. They are also said to taste like hops and an infusion of the leaves and flowers can be used to flavour beer.  An easy care plant, suitable for most sites, even dry shade, as long as the soil is not too alkaline. Ideal for poor soils and hillsides and very drought tolerant once established. 9cm pot $9.50, 11cm pot $11.50.
