Evergreen perennial native to Southern Europe and used as a red dye plant for centuries. Harvest roots for dye from the second year or third year, after the yellow star-like flowers finish. The plant also has medicinal uses but care is advised. Madder can grow to 1.5m high, either scrambling along the ground or clambering over a trellis or fence. Will grow in most soil types but prefers free draining soil in a sunny spot. Drought hardy.
