Taupata

Coprosma repens
A species of flowering shrub or small tree, also known as mirror bush.  In sheltered areas it can grow up to 8 metres in height. It has thick, glossy leaves which vary considerably in size, depending on exposure to the elements. Flowers are produced in spring and summer, the male flowers appearing in dense, compound clusters, the female flowers in smaller clusters. Female plants produce edible orange-red berries which are around 8mm in diameter and 10mm in length.  They are said to be sweet and juicy with a slight bitter aftertaste. The seeds can be roasted and ground to make a coffee substitute, indeed the coposmas belong to the same family as the coffee bean. Available from 2014.
