Strawberry Captain Cook
Fragraria x ananassa
Said to be one of the earliest varieties of strawberries brought to New Zealand. Red skin and sweet flesh. Vigorous and healthy plants. Low growing hardy perennial for full sun and moist soil. Mulch with pine needles to maintain slightly acidic soil, or use straw to keep the fruit off the ground. Pot up the runners each year and replace the mother plants every three years or so to maintain good crops of fruit.
