Viola Coeur d'Alsace
Hardy evergreen creeping groundcover for part shade, great in moist, humus-rich soil under trees. Prized for its sweet aromatic pinky-lilac flowers from late winter through spring. The heart shaped leaves and the flowers are edible and and form a useful contribution to the salad bowl during the spring 'hungry gap'. The pretty flowers are also great for decorating cakes. Both flowers and leaves can be made into a soothing tea and have a long history of medicinal use, including treatment of cancer, whooping cough and other bronchial complaints, headaches and migraines (due to the salicylic acide - used to make aspirin). 10cm high. 9cm pot.
