Mirbeck Oak

Price: $ 25.00

Quercus canariensis

The Mirbeck or Algerian Oak is native to Southern Europe and North Africa and forms a medium-sized densely-crowned broadly spreading tree, growing relatively fast to 20–30 m tall, and with a trunk up to 1.5 m diameter. It is deciduous in colder areas but semi-evergreen in warmer locations. It can tolerate exposure, frost, drought and a range of soil types including clay. Its glossy greek leaves turn yellow then brown in autumn, when excellent crops of acorns are produced. These can be used as fodder for pigs and ducks, and up to 20% of a chook diet, and can also be used as protein in a human diet if processed to remove the tannins. Mirbeck oaks are also ornamental and provide good shelter.
