Deciduous nitrogen fixing tree native to temperate areas of Iran and the Caucasus and closely related to the Italian Alder (Alnus cordata). One of the fastest growing alders even in exposed sites and ideal for shelterbelts, especially to protect from spring winds, as they leaf out a month or so earlier than the Italian Alder. Attractive tree forming a conical shape, with large green glossy heart-shaped leaves. Male and female catkins are produced on the same tree, with the females maturing into small woody cones. The bark is grey/brown and deeply fissured. The wood can be made into paper. Drought hardy but also tolerates moist soils. Mature height 15-25m.
