Maori name Kowhai Ngutukaka. Evergreen nitrogen-fixing shrub with striking clusters of red flowers resembling the beak of the kaka parrot. Critically endangered in the wild, known only on Moturemu Island in the Kaipara Harbour. Grows to around 2m in height, with spreading branches producing leaf stalks up to 15cm long bearing several pairs of small leaflets. They can flower twice a year or even year round. Can be pruned as a standard or trained against a wall. Requires shelter from frosts when young. Available from 2014.
