Cavolo Nero (Palm Tree Cabbage/Kale Lacinato)

Price: $ 4.50

Brassica oleracea acephala

Cavolo nero is a type of kale (known as lacinato or Tuscan kale, but also known as black cabbage) originally from italy, and is like a cross between cabbage and kale.  Grows on a  stem rather like a palm tree with the savoyed narrow dark green leaves forming a rosette at the top.  It is easy to grow, delicious and nutritious, containing vitamins K, A and C, as well as significant amounts of manganese, copper, fibre, calcium, iron and B vitamins, and is said to have anti-cancer properties. Keep picking for a long harvest - often of many months.  Use small leaves finely chopped in salads or use larger leaves like cabbage.  It freezes well and is actually said to taste better after a frost. If white fly is a problem, treat with a spray of 1 litre water: 1tbspn oil: 1 tspn detergent.
