Kale Red Russian (Raggedy Jack)
Brassica oleracea acephala
A tender, sweet variety of wavy-leaved kale. Blue-green leaves in warmer weather turning redder in the cold. It is easy to grow, delicious and nutritious, containing vitamins K, A and C, as well as significant amounts of fibre, calcium and iron, and is said to have anti-cancer properties. Keep picking for a long harvest - often of many months. Useful for large families as it provides an ongoing bulk harvest, but also good for small households as it can be picked leaf by leaf as required. Use small leaves finely chopped in salads or use larger leaves like cabbage. It freezes well and is actually said to taste better after a frost. If white fly is a problem, treat with a spray of 1 litre water: 1tbspn oil: 1 tspn detergent.
