Elephant Garlic

Allium ampeloprasum vara ampeloprasum

A perennial bulb, and actually a leek not a garlic at all. The bulbs are larger than true garlic, with a mild garlic flavour, and are great for roasting. The leaves are flat, and the bulb will throw up a flower head each year. The immature stalks and flower heads (known as scapes) can also be eaten if desired. The bulbs themselves can be harvested in mid summer for use, divided and replanted, or leaft to form a clump. Available as potted plants from September to November only, and ideal if you missed the winter planting season - just plant the potted plant out in spring or replant in a larger pot. 9cm pot.
