Santolina chamaecyparissus

Also known as Cotton Lavender this plant is native to the Mediterranean and is a lover of sunny dry spots. An evergreen with small yellow flowers and aromatic silver leaves, it is often used in ornamental and xeriscaping gardens.

Santolina has been used in traditional medicine in the Mediterranean region since ancient times for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, digestive, and analgesic activities. More recent research has revealed the presence of terpenoids as the main bioactive constituents of the genus. Uses include treating stomach aches and colic in infants, general digestive disorders, anxiety, and insomnia. Santonlina is also said to provide pain relief for insect stings or bites when finely ground and applied to the site. It may also speed the healing process of surface wounds through the encouragment of scar tissue.

Essential oils from the leaves and flowers have a fresh, floral scent with notes of citrus and are used in aromatherapy for their calming and relaxing properties. Dried leaves can also be used in pot pourri.

The leaves of the plant are also edible and typically used as a flavouring for broths, sauces, grain dishes etc.

Santolina does best in on dry ground, stony banks and rocks, usually on calcareous soils. It can be used as an edging plant for landscaping and can be kept trimmed as required.

Note: Some people with sensitive skin experience a severe rash in contact with the crushed leaves of this plant.
