Anthemis is a genus of aromatic flowering plants closely related to true chamomiles, indigenous to the Mediterranean region and southwest Asia east to Iran. Also known as Golden or Orange Marguerite, this pretty plant is a short-lived evergreen perennial native to the mountains of Bulgaria, where it is now somewhat endangered. It forms mounds of very attractive aromatic, fern-like leaves from which multiple flower stalks arise in late spring. These are followed by masses of flat, cheery, golden orange flowers, which last long through summer, much to the pleasure of the butterflies and bees. Frost hardy, and very drought-hardy once established. Height and spread minimum 40cm x 40cm.

Cultivation

Thrives in sunny spots in dry, gravelly or rocky soils. Dislikes humidity, especially in winter. If you are prone to winter wet, make sure you dig plenty of grit into your soil prior to planting. Plants require little maintenance once established however, apart from deadheading spent flowers to encourage further blooming.

Uses

Saint John’s Chamomile is great for garden borders, containers, gravel gardens, rockeries and xeriscaping. The flowers are fragrant and good for cutting. The petals are edible and can be used in salads, to garnish cakes etc, and the dried flowers are good in pot-pourri, and as a dye. Anthemis species generally are used widely in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries.

Medicinal Uses

Anthemis species are used in traditional Turkish folk medicine in the form of extracts, tinctures, ointments, and tisanes, to support relaxation, digestion, and mild inflammation, and more specifically to treat gastrointestinal disorders, hemorrhoids, stomach pain, Helicobacter pylori, and inflammatory diseases. Modern studies have shown that flowers of these species contain several biologically active compounds that contribute to antimicrobial and antioxidant activities.
