Description

Monarda didyma
Also known as scarlet beebalm, scarlet monarda and Eau-de-Cologne plant, this herbaceous aromatic herb is in the mint family, along with its cousin Monarda fistulosa.  The leaves are  more robust than M. fistulosa, and are minty fragrant when crushed, and the red flowers are large and ragged with tubular spires in the centre, very striking.

Both the leaves and blooms contain antibiotic and antiseptic compounds and were used extensively by North American Indian tribes. They can be used sparingly in salads or made into teas to soothe sore throats, mouth infections and colds. Poultices of the plant can be used for skin infections and minor wounds.  Bergamot is a natural source of thymol – an  antiseptic used as the main active ingredient in modern mouthwash products. Bergamot has also been used as a general stimulant and  to treat excessive flatulence.

Full sun or part shade. Crimson Bergamot grows naturally in dense clusters along stream banks, moist thickets, and ditches, and is most dramatic planted in drifts. It has a long flowering season through summer and grows to a height of  60 – 120cm.

Certified organic plant in 9cm pot.

Freight: We can send up to 9 plants this size (in 9cm pots) for the same freight price or they can be combined with other grades but this will incur higher freight costs.
