Nepeta cataria
Upright frost hardy perennial to 60cm, with white flowers in summer. Well known for its leaves and blossoms relished by cats, but less well known for its medicinal and other uses. Catnip is a traditional cold and flu remedy used in any feverish condition especially bronchitis. It can induce sleep and perspiration but does not increase body temperature. The pleasant taste and gentle action make it suitable for treating children, and the leaves and flowers contain Vitamin C. Use leaves in salads for a refreshing aromatic minty taste. The leaves are also said to deter insects such as ants and beetles, and they can help control external parasites such as lice and mites in animals and poultry.
