Nepeta cataria ssp citriodora

Divinely lemon scented variety of this upright frost hardy perennial, and one of my new favourite plants for scented leaves!

Catnip is well known for its leaves and blossoms relished by cats, but is less well known for its medicinal and other uses. It is a  traditional cold and flu remedy used in any feverish condition especially bronchitis. It can induce sleep and perspiration but does not increase body temperature. The pleasant taste and gentle action make it suitable for treating children, (this lemony version even more so than the basic species) and the leaves and flowers contain Vitamin C.  Use leaves in salads for a refreshing aromatic citrus zest. The leaves are also said to deter insects such as ants and beetles, and they can help control external parasites such as lice and mites in animals and poultry. They can also be rubbed on the skin to repel biting insects.

9cm pot. Certified organic plant.

Medical disclaimer

Jo has a passion for growing herbs but is not a qualified herbalist and has no medical background.

We are lucky to have Patricia Beagle working here at times, who is qualified, and some of her advice does appear on these pages, but herbs act differently for different people and can interact with other medicines. We therefore always recommend that you consult with your own qualified health-care practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing or on any medications.
