Description
Artemisia chamaemelifolia syn. A.iberica, A.stechmanniana
Also known as Lady’s Maid, this plant from the daisy family originates from mountainous areas of Eastern and Western Europe and the Caucasus across to Iran, where it is is now listed as critically endangered.
Artemisia species are known for the powerful chemical constituents in their essential oils – substances such as terpenoids, flavonoids, coumarins, caffeoylquinic acids, and sterols which have been extracted for medicinal and other uses such as insecticides, antimalarials, cytotoxins, antihepatotoxic, fungicides, antibacterials, and allelochemicals. Chamomile Wormwood has been used as a medicinal herb by indigenous populations, and studies have confirmed its antimicrobial, antifungal, antiparasitic and antitumor properties.
Low clumping/mat forming aromatic plant spreading sideways to about a metre across, occasionally up to 2m. The airy, feathered, chamomile-like foliage is highly aromatic. Great for low maintenance plantings and lovely near a pathway where you brush past to release the scent, or near a chook run to repel pests. In mid summer brilliant greenish-yellow tiny stellate flowers are produced which are attarctive to butterfies.
Enjoys full sun, on a dry to averagely moist (not wet), well drained site. Drought and extremely frost hardy – to -40 degrees C! Artemisias tend to be longer lived, more hardy and more aromatic when they are grown in a poor dry soil. Height to 50cm.
Certified organic plant. 9cm pot
