Description

Cornus kousa chinensis

Hardy deciduous tree sporting a spectacular display of long lasting white flower bracts in early summer. These are followed by pinky-red compound fruits in late autumn, which can be eaten raw or cooked. They are small and rather seedy but have a custard-like pulp with a tropical flavour, and apparently score well on flavour with visitors to forest gardens. The flowers can also be eaten raw or used to make syrups. The twigs and thin branches can be used in basketry.  The size of leaves and fruit of the Cornus kousa chinensis are bigger than the species, Cornus kousa, and the crop is generally larger.

Height 4-10m, can be coppiced. Tolerant of most soils, including heavy clay, but prefers moisture. Sun or part shade.

PB Approx height 100- 120cm. Certified Organic Plant.
