Clover Red Feathers

Trifolium rubens 'Red Feathers'

$9.50

Also known as Ornamental Clover (for good reason!), Feather Clover and Ruddy Clover, Trifolium rubens is an extremely ornamental clump-forming (not spreading) perennial. It is an excellent companion and wildlife plant. The typical trifoliate leaves are bluish green and the large upright conical flower buds are covered in a thick layer of minute silvery hairs, with buds bursting open into large, magenta flowers (not red!). The plants are in flower from late spring to early autumn and are an absolute magnet for bees, butterflies and other pollinators, being a rich source of both nectar and pollen. Cut back spent blooms after flowering to encourage a second flush or leave to self-seed.

Red clover leaves and flowers are edible and can be used in salads and teas, and seeds can be sprouted for salads.

Red Feathers does well in average soils but best in well-drained, fertile soil, in full sun or partial shade. It can handle clay and can help to break up and improve clay soils. Like all clovers it fixes nitrogen.

Established plant in 9cm pot. Certified organic.
