Dalmation Bellflower

Campanula portenschlagiana

$8.50

An alpine groundcover hailing from the Dalmatian Mountains in Croatia. Forms a vigorous, low-growing mat of small leaves, smothered in lilac-blue bell-shaped flowers in summer.  Frost hardy.  Height to 20cm. Perennial.

Cultivation

Prefers poorer, free draining soils in sun or part shade (the latter is preferable in hotter climates). Water in dry spells only and ensure the plant is not water-logged in winter.

Uses

Great ground cover plant for sun or part shade. Useful for covering tricky drier spots such as banks and walls. Campanulas are edible – the pretty flowers can be used in salads or for cake decorations, and the leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. The root is also edible but small and hard to harvest. The flowers attract bees.
