Date Plum

Diospyros lotus

$34.00

Date plum is also known as Caucasian persimmon and is closely related to the better known Japanese or Oriental persimmon. It is native to easier Asia and is one of the oldest cultivated fruits. Date plum is a deciduous, spreading tree growing to around 8 metres tall by 6 metres wide with glossy, dark green leaves up to 10cm long. It bears tiny, bell-shaped, greenish flowers in mid- to late summer. Male and female flowers usually occur on separate plants. Pollinated female flowers develop into fruits are the size of a large cherry, and are delicious but only when fully ripe (otherwise extremely astringent). They turn from yellow to blue-black when fully ripe, and have flavours of dates and plums. Female trees can also produce seedless fruits in the absence of a pollinator. These are likely to be more astringent than fertilized fruits.  Very frost hardy once established.

Grown from seed and unsexed, so planting at least three is advised. BUY THREE PLANTS FOR PRICE DISCOUNT – $90 FOR THREE PLANTS. DISCOUNT WILL BE APPLIED ON INVOICE.

PB3 50 – 70 cm high.

Cultivation

Enjoys a very sheltered position in full sun or part-shade in deep, fertile, neutral or alkaline soils. Tolerates wetter soils than the Japanese persimmon. A long warm or hot summer is required to ripen the fruit, but frosts will help to sweeten them. However, protect the tree from frost when young. Keep watered through dry spells.

Uses

The fruit can be eaten raw or cooked, or dried like dates. The trees can be used for rootstocks for other species of persimmon. Diospyros species are in the same family as Ebony, and the wood is durable, rot-resistant and good for general-purpose carpentry.

Medicinal Uses

The fruit is used in its native areas as a sedative, astringent, nutritive, antiseptic, antidiabetic, antitumor, laxative, antipyretic and for the treatment of constipation. Fruit extracts have been shown to be high in antioxidants.
