Description
Inula helenium
Tall medicinal herb with attractive yellow flowers. Second season dried root is used as a decongestant with a gentle but effective action on coughs and bronchitis, and also as a tonic, diuretic and skin treatment. The leaves were also eaten by the Romans as a pot herb but are rather bitter, and the root can be candied and eaten as a sweetmeat.
Full sun to part shade, prefers moist soil. Height to 2m.
