Flat Sea Holly

Eryngium planum

Price range: $9.50 through $11.50

Also known as Blue Eryngo, this summer flowering perennial is native to a belt from central Europe through central Asia. Overwintering as a low basal rosette, fleshy heart shaped leaves extend in spring, followed in summer by steel-blue spiky stems topped with stunning thistle-like flowers heads of metallic blue. The blooms are prolific and long-lasting and loved by bees. Height to 80cm when in flower. Frost and drought hardy.

9cm or 11cm pot

Cultivation

Flat Sea Holly prefers warm, well drained sandy soil in plenty of sun. In sunnier areas of the country it can tolerate partial shade but the sunnier the spot, the more the intense blue of the flowers will be. It will tolerate clay soils if  grown on a slope or in raised beds or if the soil is amended to improve drainage.

Uses

Flat Sea Holly is perfect for gravel gardens and rockeries, xeriscaping, coastal gardens and new perennial style plantings. Its nectar rich flowers are a magnet for bees, butterflies and other pollinators and beneficial insects. Leaving the seed heads in autumn will benefit you with their dramatic silhouette, as well as providing food for finches. Alternatively both fresh or dried flowers are great for flower arrangements. To dry the flowers, cut them at the base of the plant and hang them upside down in a dry location.

Jo Says

I would suggest you don’t plant eryngiums near a pathway or high-traffic area due to the spiky nature of the flower heads. In the language of flowers the eryngiums represent admiration, but I think it’s probably best to admire them from a wee distance – unless you’re a bee of course!
