Centaurea scabiosa

Hardy perennial wild flower of dry grasslands and cliff tops on alkaline soils. An absolute magnet for bees and butterflies, the reddish-purple flowers are a cross between other related cornflowers, and thistles. The roots and seeds are diaphoretic, diuretic, tonic and vulnerary. The plant once had a very high reputation as an ingredient of the Medieval “salve”, an ointment applied to heal wounds and treat skin infections.

Height to 90cm. Full sun. 9cm pot. Certified organic plant.
