Viburnum opulus
Hardy deciduous shrub to 3m, native to Europe and Asia. Note that this is NOT the sterile version commonly sold at garden centres. Suitable for most soil types and enjoys some moisture but is drought hardy once established. Full sun or part shade. Beautiful blossoms in spring and stunning autumn leaf colour. The fruits are very acidic, though better after a frost, but are rich in Vitamin C and are excellent added to jams etc. Both Viburnum opulus and V. trilobum are known as ‘crampbark’ and have been used medicinally in their respective native areas. The bark is collected in the early spring or late autumn and dried in pieces or immediately tinctured. Crampbark is known best for its antispasmodic effect on muscle groups. It has a special affinity for the uterus and is therefore often given for menstrual cramps, to prevent miscarriage or to alleviate afterbirth pains. It can be equally effective for arthritis, asthma or back pain for both men and women.

Jo has a passion for growing herbs but is not a qualified herbalist and has no medical background.
We are lucky to have Patricia Beagle working here at times, who is qualified, and some of her advice does appear on these pages, but herbs act differently for different people and can interact with other medicines. We therefore always recommend that you consult with your own qualified health-care practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing or on any medications.
