Brassica oleracea acephala
Heavy yielding variety of curly kale, with blue-green savoyed leaves. It is easy to grow, delicious and nutritious, containing vitamins K, A and C, as well as significant amounts of fibre, calcium and iron, and is said to have anti-cancer properties. Keep picking for a long harvest over many months – we’ve even harvested from the same plant for a year. Useful for large families as it provides an ongoing large harvest, but also good for small households as it can be picked leaf by leaf as required. Use small leaves finely chopped in salads or use larger leaves like cabbage. Curly kale is also said to be the best for making kale chips. It freezes well and is actually said to taste better after a frost. It also makes great chicken feed. If white fly is a problem, treat with a spray of 1 litre water: 1tbspn oil: 1 tspn detergent. 9cm pot, certified organic plant. Available autumn – spring.
