Cucumis metuliferus

This crazy looking fruit is known by several names including Horned Cucumber, Horned Melon, Spiked Melon, Jelly Melon, and my favourite: Cuke-a-saurus! The horns refer to the spikes which cover the thick rind of the fruit – you’ll definitely need gloves to harvest this one! But it’s definitely worth it! The pulpy flesh inside is like a sweet cucumber or mild flavoured melon, some say with hints of banana, passionfruit and lime flavour, with a jelly-like texture, and edible seeds.  You can eat it raw or cooked,  cut in half and scooped out of the ‘shell’ with a spoon, or add the pulp to smoothies or dolloped onto icecream (a bit like how you’d use passionfruit pulp).  It’s full of vitamins and minerals including 18% of the RDA of Vitamin C and 21% of magnesium RDA and is relatively high in protein compared to other fruits. The pulp contains a range of anti-oxidants and the seeds contain vitamin E, another anti-oxidant. In their homelands of Africa, kiwano is a traditional food plant, and a rare source of water in the dry season in the Kalahari desert.

The fruits are produced along a ground-trailing vine and turn from green through yellow to orange when ripe.  Like cucumbers don’t let them get overripe though. Treat them like melons or cucumbers in terms of growing conditions.
