Solanum sisymbriifolium
Double warning: I am seriously thorny but very addictive! This somewhat bizarre tomato and potato relative produces large flowers similar to potatoes followed by delicious richly flavoured fruit which are a bit like a cross between a cherry and a tomato – a much richer flavour than tomatoes. It produces all summer and into winter and we have found that the shrub tolerates a very light frost. Otherwise the plant enjoys the same conditions as tomatoes. All parts of the shrub are prickly, even the calyx, so you must pick fruit with great care, but you will be amazed at how, despite this, it keeps you coming back for more!!

Grows to a height of 1.5m and requires staking. Plant in full sun and protect from late and heavy frosts.

9cm pot certified organic plant. Available Nov – Feb.

Freight: We can send up to 9 plants this size (in 9cm pots) for the same freight price or they can be combined with other grades but this will incur higher freight costs.

Medical disclaimer

Jo has a passion for growing herbs but is not a qualified herbalist and has no medical background.

We are lucky to have Patricia Beagle working here at times, who is qualified, and some of her advice does appear on these pages, but herbs act differently for different people and can interact with other medicines. We therefore always recommend that you consult with your own qualified health-care practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing or on any medications.
