Mock/Indian Strawberry

$9.50

Duchesnea indica syn Potentilla indica

Evergreen groundcover plant with glossy leaves and yellow flowers all summer. These are followed by edible strawberry-like fruit, approx 10mm across, much like a wild or alpine strawberry, with a pleasant but slightly insipid flavour and slightly grainy texture. The whole plant has medicinal uses, being anticoagulant, antiseptic, depurative and febrifuge and used in decoction e.g. for swellings, or the fresh leaves can be crushed and applied externally as a poultice, e.g. for abscesses, boils, and burns.  It is also used in the treatment of weeping eczema, ringworm, stomatitis, laryngitis, acute tonsillitis, snake and insect bites and traumatic injuries.  An infusion of the flowers can be used to activate the blood circulation.

The plant spreads on runners to form a reasonably dense ground cover and is good as part of a low-fuel firebreak or as groundcover under trees and areas where bulbs are planted. It enjoys full sun through to quite dense shade and prefers moist but well drained soil. Height to 10cm.

Certified Organic plant in 9cm pot.

Freight: We can send up to 9 plants this size (in 9cm pots) for the same freight price or they can be combined with other grades but this will incur higher freight costs.
