Description

Umbilicus rupestris

This funky little plant, also known as Wall Pennywort, hails from  southern and western Europe where it can be found growing on shady walls or in damp rock crevices. The round succulent leaves develop in rosettes, and have a navel-like depression in the centre reminiscent of a belly button, hence the common name “navelwort” and the scientific name ‘Umbilicus’. It is in the Stonecrop family of plants.

[This plant should not be confused with Centella asiatica which is also known as Pennywort (and Gotu Kola) and is also a medicinal herb, and one which we are currently also building up stocks of for sale.]

Navelwort leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. They are quite bitter but very juicy and succulent and very enjoyable in salads. During the heat of summer they may become too bitter to be palatable however.

The plant is also medicinal, with the leaves being  mildly analgesic. The juice and extract of the plant have an old reputation for the treatment of epilepsy. The leaves are also made into a poultice and used in the treatment of piles, slight burns and scalds.. A decoction of the leaves is considered to be cooling and diuretic and the juice taken inwardly is said to be excellent for treating inflammations of the liver and spleen.

Navelwort enjoys part shade and some moisture and is otherwise easy care.

Certified organic plant in 9cm pot.
