Oreganum vulgare
Well known herb common in Mediterranean cuisine. Leaves are used fresh or dried for fish, cheese, tomato, soup and meat dishes and especially pizza. Medicinally it has a long history of use for respiratory and digestive problems, in the treatment of colds and flu, and to promote menstruation. A tea made of the leaves is soothing and restful. A good ground cover and companion plant, useful in the vege garden as it is said to repel many pests, plus the mauve-pink flowers are attractive to bees. Hardy perennial growing to 45cm when in flower. Full sun or part shade. Relatively drought hardy.
9cm pot. Certified organic plant.

Jo has a passion for growing herbs but is not a qualified herbalist and has no medical background.
We are lucky to have Patricia Beagle working here at times, who is qualified, and some of her advice does appear on these pages, but herbs act differently for different people and can interact with other medicines. We therefore always recommend that you consult with your own qualified health-care practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing or on any medications.
