Albizia julibrissin f.rosea
Small deciduous, extremely ornamental, nitrogen-fixing tree growing 5 – 7m tall with a broad crown of level or arching branches. Fragrant, pink pin-cushion flowers look like silky threads, are produced in abundance in mid summer and are attractive to bees and butterflies.
The young leaves and flowers have an aromatic flavour and can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable. Dried leaves may be used as a tea substitute. The flowers and bark have a huge range of medicinal uses. Wood is dense and strong and good for furniture or firewood. Seeds can be used as fodder for livestock.
Suitable for most soil types but must be well drained. Drought tolerant. Frost hardy. Excellent tree for dappled shade. Tolerates strong winds but not maritime exposure.
