Albizia julibrissin f.rosea
Small deciduous, extremely ornamental, nitrogen-fixing tree growing 5 – 7m tall with a broad crown of level or arching branches. Fragrant, pink pin-cushion flowers look like silky threads, are produced in abundance in mid summer and are attractive to bees and butterflies.
The young leaves and flowers have an aromatic flavour and can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable. Dried leaves may be used as a tea substitute. The flowers and bark have a huge range of medicinal uses. Wood is dense and strong and good for furniture or firewood. Seeds can be used as fodder for livestock.
Suitable for most soil types but must be well drained. Drought tolerant. Frost hardy. Excellent tree for dappled shade. Tolerates strong winds but not maritime exposure.

Jo has a passion for growing herbs but is not a qualified herbalist and has no medical background.
We are lucky to have Patricia Beagle working here at times, who is qualified, and some of her advice does appear on these pages, but herbs act differently for different people and can interact with other medicines. We therefore always recommend that you consult with your own qualified health-care practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing or on any medications.
