Description
Portulaca oleracea sativa
Succulent summer salad plant, a great one for kids, who seem to really enjoy the texture. Add the leaves to salads for a mild, crisp and juicy bite. They are very nutritious – high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They also contain unusually high levels of omega-3 fatty acids for a salad green. The level of acidity in the leaves fluctuates throughout the day, making them more sour first thing in the morning, so harvest them according to the flavour you like. The flowers can also be eaten. Pick to within 5cm of the base and new stems and leaves will regrow. The plant accumulates calcium, phosphorus and iron. Frost tender annual. Plant 10 – 15 cm apart.
9cm pot. Certified organic plant. Available Nov – March only.
