Description

Fragraria x ananassa

Low growing hardy perennial for full sun and moist soil. Said to be one of the earliest varieties of strawberries brought to New Zealand, with red skin and sweet flesh. Aside from being delicious in their own right, strawberries contain compounds such as anthocyanins which have significant health benefits and have been studied for their anti-cancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-parasitic, and antiviral activities, as well as their ability to regulate blood glucose. They have been used medicinally at least since Roman times. The berries were believed to be a cure for gout and helpful for digestive problems, the leaves, fruit, crowns, and roots were used in the preparations of ointments, medicinal teas, and syrups, and the leaves are mildly diuretic and astringent due to their high tannin content, and have been used as a laxative.

Captain Cook are vigorous and healthy plants.  Mulch with pine needles to maintain slightly acidic soil, or use straw to keep the fruit off the ground. Pot up the runners each year and replace the mother plants every three years or so to maintain good crops of fruit.

9cm pot. Established plant. Certified organic.
