Description

Tagetes lucida
Also known as Texas Tarragon and Mexican Tarragon. The sweet licorice flavour of the flowers of this herb brightens salads, and dried makes a superb tea.  It has many medicinal uses including  in the treatment of diarrhoea, nausea, indigestion and malaria.  Being of the marigold family it has insecticidal properties and is therefore a useful companion plant. Secretions from its roots are said to repel nematodes, some slugs and possibly couch grass and the whole plant is said to repel some weevils. The whole plant can be dried and burnt to repel insects. A yellow dye can be obtained from the flowers, which are very attractive in their own right, as well as being sweet smelling. Requires full sun and average soil conditions. Perennial which may overwinter in sheltered spots but better treated as an annual in frosty areas.  Height 45cm. 9cm pot. Available Dec – Feb only.
