Tibetan Gentian

Gentiana tibetica

Price range: $10.50 through $12.50

Herbaceous perennial native to Tibet. Traditionally used in Chinese and Ayurvedic as well as Tibetan medicine to improve digestive and liver function as well as in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Gentian is a bitter herb commonly taken as a tea from the dried leaves. It is known as Qin Jiao in Chinese.

This extremely hardy and rare Gentian is easier than other gentians to grow in the home garden. It will benefit from partial shade and an evenly moist soil in very hot summer areas. Tibetan Gentians form an attractive rosette of fleshy, succulent leaves. The unusual tubular flowers, which may be bluish or light greenish-white in colour, form at the top of a bare stem reaching approximately 60cm when in full bloom.

Medical disclaimer

Jo has a passion for growing herbs but is not a qualified herbalist and has no medical background.

We are lucky to have Patricia Beagle working here at times, who is qualified, and some of her advice does appear on these pages, but herbs act differently for different people and can interact with other medicines. We therefore always recommend that you consult with your own qualified health-care practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing or on any medications.
