Tall, slender-stemmed perennial rising from a cluster of leaves at the base, which becomes woody over time. It is famous for its airy lavender to rose-purple flowers held in tight clusters on long stems up to 1m high, blooming from mid-summer until autumn. These flowers are magnets for pollinator insects, and make good cut flowers too, as well as looking fabulous in a garden border, especially a wild ‘new perennial’ style garden.
Some sources list this species as a medicinal herb, however it is more usually Verbena officinalis (Vervain) which is used medicinally. I’m always keen to hear from herbalists so let me know if you have more information!
Plants require full sun or just a little shade, and are drought hardy for periods but do prefer some summer moisture. They do best in free draining soil.
