Volunteering at Kahikatea Farm

First we’d like to say “Thank You”...

….to the many volunteers we have welcomed over the years. We truly value the great mahi you have done and the huge contribution you have made – tēnā rawa atu koutou!

What’s the commitment?

Over the years people have volunteered in many different capacities and we are always open to new arrangements!

  • Locals who want to offer a regular day a week
  • Joining a one-off working bee
  • Longer term exchange for living on site whilst doing relevant offsite or online studies e.g. permaculture or herbal medicine
  • Formal arrangements through WWOOF and Workaway – we are members of both

Where will i work?

It depends on your interests and our current projects but some options are in the

  • Food Forest
  • Silvopasture System
  • Horse Track System
  • Vege Garden
  • Medicinal Herb Garden
  • Native revegetation
  • Nursery

Please note we do not take volunteers in the nursery to replace the work of paid contractors but we can make arrangements if there is something you’d like to learn.

What work will i do?

The work is very seasonal but could include:

  • Planting trees
  • Planting veges and herbs
  • Harvesting
  • Processing
  • Mulching
  • Pruning
  • Making compost
  • Native revegetation
  • Propagation
  • Mowing
  • Building projects
  • General maintenance
  • Animal management

What we can offer

If you are coming to help in the name of ‘earth care’, the least we can do is offer ‘people care’ and ‘fair share’ (the other two permaculture ethics) – in return for your mahi.

We undertake to keep you safe with a full health and safety briefing.

We are more than happy to share our time, knowledge and resources, including farm produce, plant material and books. Sometimes we may be able to offer free places on courses and workshops. We all share generous coffee breaks together – a social gathering of whoever is working on the farm or in the nursery that day, with plenty of opportunity for doggie cuddles with our fab four!

And we try our best to:

  • Make sure you understand what you are doing and why, how it impacts our land, and how you could use or adapt the ideas for your own situation.

  • Ensure tasks are varied and not too mundane

  • Ensure that you are learning what you want to be learning

  • Above all, make sure you are having FUN!
