Achillea ptarmica

$9.50

This plant goes by many common names, including sneezewort, sneezeweed, bastard pellitory, European pellitory, fair-maid-of-France, goose tongue, sneezewort yarrow, wild pellitory and white tansy! It is a European species of herbaceous perennial flowering plant in the genus Achillea, the same genus as common yarrow. Its dark green leaves have finely toothed margins and late spring brings masses of long lasting white pompom flowers in airy clusters. The leaves and stems die back in winter to a basal mound. Height to 75cm when in flower.

Cultivation

Enjoys a sunny well drained spot and prefers poor soils. It will tolerate drought, maritime conditions and is also frost hardy, however we have found it competes less well with grass than yarrow and also needs more moisture.

Uses

The leaves can be eaten raw or cooked in small quantities. They have many medicinal uses. The flowers attract bees and butterflies. The plant may be poisonous to cattle, sheep and horses. It makes a pretty ground cover and can be mixed with other achilleas for effect.

Medicinal Uses

Achillea species have been used medicinally since ancient times, and modern phytochemical research into Achillea species has revealed many highly bioactive components from this genus, including A.nobilis. However, refer to Achillea millefolium  for more information.

Primary Actions: anti-inflammatory, cardiac, diaphoretic, digestive, emmenagogue, odontalgic, sternutatory and styptic

Parts Used: leaves

History / Folklore / Further Info

The name ptarmica comes from the Greek word ptairo meaning ’causes sneezing’, and the dried flowers were once used as an ingredient in traditional snuff.
