This plant goes by many common names, including sneezewort, sneezeweed, bastard pellitory, European pellitory, fair-maid-of-France, goose tongue, sneezewort yarrow, wild pellitory and white tansy! It is a European species of herbaceous perennial flowering plant in the genus Achillea, the same genus as common yarrow. Its dark green leaves have finely toothed margins and late spring brings masses of long lasting white pompom flowers in airy clusters. The leaves and stems die back in winter to a basal mound. Height to 75cm when in flower.

Enjoys a sunny well drained spot and prefers poor soils. It will tolerate drought, maritime conditions and is also frost hardy, however we have found it competes less well with grass than yarrow and also needs more moisture.
Achillea species have been used medicinally since ancient times, and modern phytochemical research into Achillea species has revealed many highly bioactive components from this genus, including A.nobilis. However, refer to Achillea millefolium for more information.
Primary Actions: anti-inflammatory, cardiac, diaphoretic, digestive, emmenagogue, odontalgic, sternutatory and styptic

Jo has a passion for growing herbs but is not a qualified herbalist and has no medical background.
We are lucky to have Patricia Beagle working here at times, who is qualified, and some of her advice does appear on these pages, but herbs act differently for different people and can interact with other medicines. We therefore always recommend that you consult with your own qualified health-care practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing or on any medications.
