Also known as Perennial Wall Rocket, this plant is native to many warmer parts of Europe as far east as Turkey. Spicy salad green in the Brassica family, great for cut and come again harvesting, with an attractive, distinctive indented leaf edge.  Similar to cultivated rocket in flavour, though perhaps a little more peppery, and also slower to bolt and often perennial. It produces yellow flowers which attract bees and beneficial insects and will still have a long harvesting period at this point. Height to 40cm.

9cm pot.

Cultivation

Arugula enjoys a spot in full sun, in well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH. Keep cool and well watered in summer to ensure softer, less bitter leaves, however this plant is extremely drought hardy.

Uses

Arugula is not only good in salads but also on pizzas and teamed with tomatoes in summer. It can also be added to smoothies for a peppery kick. The flowers also have a peppery and mild aniseed flavour and can be used as an edible garnish.

Great bee attractor.

Medicinal Uses

The Brassicaceae family is well-known for its abundance of bioactive compounds, including glucosinolates, which act as precursors to isothiocyanates, compounds linked to a range of health benefits.  Arugula leaves are also rich in fibre and essential minerals, such as calcium, iron, potassium, and magnesium.

History / Folklore / Further Info

The common name “rocket” is a corruption of the Italian word ruchetta, which describes various plants in the Brassica family.

Jo Says

This is a great plant to grow at the bach for summer salads, not requiring additional care through the year.
