Also known as Showy Calamint. Herbaceous sweetly aromatic perennial native to the Mediterranean. Forms a low growing spreading mound with fragrant very pale blue-lilac tubular flower spikes in summer. Height to 60cm when in flower. Frost hardy – winter dormant.

Cultivation

Plant in a sunny spot in any average garden soil. Prefers reasonably good drainage. Can tolerate reasonably dry soil with some watering in hot spells.

Uses

Both leaves and flowers are edible. Calamint is a popular Italian culinary herb with a pleasant flavour, a mix of mint and oregano, and is deserving of wider recognition. A refreshing tea can be made from the leaves.

The flowers are very attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators. The plant makes a good addition to herb and rock gardens.

Medicinal Uses

The herb has been used medicinally for many hundreds of years. It has antiseptic, diaphoretic and expectorant uses. It should not be taken by pregnant women.

History / Folklore / Further Info

The word “calamint” traces its origins back to the Greek “kalaminthe,” meaning either “odiferous plant” or “beautiful mint.” derived from the Greek Kalos (excellent because of the ancient belief in its power to drive away serpents and the dreaded basilisk – the fabled king of the serpents, whose very glance was fatal.
