Description
Tanacetum balsamita
Also known as Alecost, this is a perennial Mediterranean herb with silvery leaves and small yellow button flowers in summer. Use small quantities of the aromatic leaves in salads or dried to make a delicious tea. They can also be used to line a cake tin to infuse the flavour into a cake. The plant has medicinal uses, in particular to aid digestion, though it is seldom used now. Its aromatic fragrance lends itself to use as a strewing herb and in pot pourri. It was also formerly used in brewing before the widespread use of hops – could be worth reviving this tradition perhaps?! Full sun or part shade, suited to most soil types. Height to 1.5m.
9cm pot. Certified organic plant.
