Apium graveolens
Excellent red stemmed variety of this celery for growing as a herb in pots or in the garden, making a stunning addition to the vege or herb plot.  Grows like Italian (flat leaf) parsley but has a celery flavour, and requires way less water than regular celery.  Use the stems and leaves separately or together as you would for normal celery – in salads, soups and stews.  Plants can be cut frequently, starting about 4 weeks after planting. They will regrow and remain productive over many months. Cutting Celery also dries really well, simply hang upside down in a well-ventilated area. Alternatively chop and cover with olive oil and freeze into ice cube trays. Commercially grown celery is one most pesticide-contaminated vegetable crops, so it’s great to grow your own at home. Celery is low in carbohydrates and calories and high in potassium – so good for the heart and muscles. Celery seeds can be used as flavouring or spice, either as whole seeds or ground and mixed with salt.

A great plant for kids to harvest and use to dip into hummus etc.

Prefers a sunny spot.  Hardy biennial, and self seeds down in the same place pretty well – I’ve had it in the same spot for several years. Usual height approx 45cm, though I have seen it well over a metre high in a mound of horse manure!

9cm pot. Certified organic plant.
