Also known as Spur Valerian and Jupiter’s Beard, this is a robust easy care perennial or subshrub with bluish-green fleshy leaves and abundant airy white clusters of flowers. It has an exceptionally long flowering period from late spring to autumn. Native to the Mediterranean regions, it is tolerant of drought and is also frost hardy. Height to 80cm when in flower.
Note that this plant has no medicinal uses and should not be confused with true valerian (Valeriana officinalis).
9cm pot
These plants require full sun and are very drought hardy, thriving even in very poor stony soils. They do not enjoy humid conditions but can cope with heavier soils as long as there is good drainage. False Valerian thrives in coastal areas, and is also particularly tolerant of alkaline conditions and can therefore cope with situations such as cracks in cement paving, brick and stone walls and gravel gardens. A very low maintenance plant, which requires no fertiliser and little water. However, if you are growing it for the edible leaves, it pays to grow it in reasonable garden soil and keep it watered in dry spells, otherwise the leaves will be very bitter. Cut spent flower heads to encourage further flowers, and to prevent self-seeding, which can be an issue in the right conditions.
None known. This plant should not be confused with true valerian (Valeriana officinalis).

Jo has a passion for growing herbs but is not a qualified herbalist and has no medical background.
We are lucky to have Patricia Beagle working here at times, who is qualified, and some of her advice does appear on these pages, but herbs act differently for different people and can interact with other medicines. We therefore always recommend that you consult with your own qualified health-care practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing or on any medications.
