Mentha spicata syn sachalinensis
Also known as common or garden mint. Easy to grow perennial herb which may become invasive if not contained in a pot. Great for adding to new potatoes in the cooking water or for making mint sauce to aid digestion of lamb. In general mint is said to have a beneficial effect on digestion, and it may help relieve some symptoms of colds also. Also said to have a very high antioxidant effect. The flowers are attractive to bees and the smell of mint is said to deter rodents, so it can be grown in areas where grain is stored. Moisture-loving herb for full sun or partial shade.

Jo has a passion for growing herbs but is not a qualified herbalist and has no medical background.
We are lucky to have Patricia Beagle working here at times, who is qualified, and some of her advice does appear on these pages, but herbs act differently for different people and can interact with other medicines. We therefore always recommend that you consult with your own qualified health-care practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing or on any medications.
