Description
Liriope muscari
Also known as Lilyturf , this clump-forming evergreen, grass-like perennial has spikes of small light pink flowers similar to Muscari (Grape Hyacinth) in summer through to autumn, providing nectar and pollen for bees and other beneficial insects. Thes flowers are followed in autumn by purple-black, shiny, round berries around 8mm in size.
Muscari Liriopes are known in China as Duantingshanmaidong and are used medicinally. The plant contains flavonoids, polysaccharides, triterpenoids, phenolic compounds and enzymes such as peroxidase and catalase, which contribute to its anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, stimulant, analgesic, and anti-cancer properties. In Korea it is used as a tonic to increase stamina, and also as an expectorant. Both leaves and roots can be used for infusions, tinctures, poultices etc. Leaves can be used fresh or dried and added to salads, soups, or stir-fries, but should not be consumed in high quantities. The roots are cooked or candied before use.
Muscari are native to forests, including bamboo forests, scrub, shady and moist slopes in parts of Asia. Their fibrous root system helps stabilize soil so they make a great ground cover for preventing erosion, as well as edging beds and controlling weeds. Their compact growth, low height (approx. 30cm, or 40cm when in flower), and soft leaves also make them perfect for edging pathways. Despite their spreading root systems, Liriopes are not considered invasive, indeed they can be slow to spread initially. Space plants 30cm apart and keep them weeded for the first year or two.
Liriopes are very easy-care and adaptable and will grow in sand or clay, in full sun or part shade, but do need well-draining soil. They are drought tolerant once established, but do prefer moisture to keep them looking at their best. Liriopes are evergreen in warmer climates but may die back over winter in the coldest climates.
