These are plants which can withstand a good long blast – the worst winter southerlies and the warm drying spring equinoctials. Plant them as a windbreak, also known as a shelterbelt, to protect your more tender specimens and target crops. Permaculture design planning is essential here. You need to know where your strongest winds come from and when, think about whether you need evergreen or deciduous species, what height you need them, what shade they’ll cast on your house or other plants, how to avoid causing frost pockets etc. Permaculture books can help with this, or why not sign up to one of our permaculture or food forest courses!
