This pretty cousin of the yarrow, and member of the sunflower family, is native to Eurasia and the Caucasus. The foliage is less dissected and more of a blue-green than yarrow, and forms a low-growing clump in early spring. In late spring the flowering stems are produced, growing to 75 cm tall. Both foliage and stems are covered with soft hairs and are gently aromatic. Like yarrow, the flowers are produced in clusters (umbels), but Noble Yarrow has more flower heads of smaller flowers. These are creamy-white through to pale yellow in colour and are extremely attractive to pollinators. Perennial.
9cm pot.
Like Common Yarrow, Noble Yarrow is sun loving but is even more drought hardy, loving dry, calcareous, nutrient poor sites. It will only need watering in the hottest parts of summer. Frost and wind hardy and generally pet and disease-free. Cut back after flowering and divide clumps every few years. A very easy care plant which doesn’t spread like Common Yarrow.
Achillea species have been used medicinally since ancient times, and modern phytochemical research into Achillea species has revealed many highly bioactive components from this genus, including A.nobilis. Refer to Achillea millefolium for more information.

Jo has a passion for growing herbs but is not a qualified herbalist and has no medical background.
We are lucky to have Patricia Beagle working here at times, who is qualified, and some of her advice does appear on these pages, but herbs act differently for different people and can interact with other medicines. We therefore always recommend that you consult with your own qualified health-care practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing or on any medications.
