Description
Achillea nobilis
This pretty cousin of the yarrow, and member of the sunflower family, is native to Eurasia and the Caucasus. Like yarrow it is sun loving but the Noble Yarrow is even more drought hardy, loving dry, calcareous, nutrient poor sites. The foliage is less dissected and more of a blue-green than yarrow, and forms a low-growing clump in early spring. In late spring the flowering stems are produced, growing to 75 cm tall. Both foliage and stems are covered with soft hairs and are gently aromatic. Like yarrow, the flowers are produced in clusters (umbels), but Noble Yarrow has more flower heads of smaller flowers. These are creamy-white through to pale yellow in colour and are extremely attractive to bees, butterflies, hoverflies and many other beneficial insects. All in all a fantastic plant for xeriscaping (water-wise or dry gardening) and wildlife or natural perennial gardens.
Achillea species have also been used medicinally since ancient times. Uses include treatment of wounds, bleedings, headache, inflammation, pains, spasmodic diseases, flatulence and dyspepsia. Phytochemical research into Achillea species has revealed many highly bioactive components from this genus, including A.nobilis.
