Description

Thymus fragrantissimus syn Thymus citriodorus ‘Fragrantissimus’

This gorgeous gourmet thyme is warmly citrus scented and flavoured, not at all bitter, and useful for many culinary purposes both savoury and sweet. What’s more, it is famous for its ability to thrive in even the most depleted and dry soils.

Thyme has many medicinal uses. The whole plant is anthelmintic, strongly antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, deodorant, diaphoretic, disinfectant, expectorant, sedative and tonic. It is taken internally in the treatment of bronchitis, catarrh, laryngitis, flatulent indigestion, painful menstruation, colic and hangovers. Externally, it is applied to minor injuries, mastitis, mouth, throat and gum infections etc. The plant can be used fresh at any time of the year, or it can be harvested as it comes into flower and either be distilled for the oil or dried for later use. The seeds are used as a vermifuge. Thyme should not be taken if pregnant.

An essential oil from the leaves is used in perfumery, soaps, toothpaste, mouthwashes and can be used as a spray to help prevent mould.

Orange Thyme is an important bee plant as its tiny pinkish-white flowers produce much nectar, and it makes delicious flavoured honey. It also forms a good ground cover plant for sunny sites, dry gardens.  As a vege garden companion it is said to repel cabbage root fly.  Height to 30cm.
